Working abroad

Can I do mission with Latin Link in my own country, or do I have to go abroad?

‘Latin mission’ is our focus, so this would usually mean working in the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America. However, it is possible you could work with Latin American migrants in Europe.

Alternatively, you could join our Network of local volunteers who support and raise the profile of Latin Link where they live, work or study and help out at regional events.

Will Latin Link arrange for my work permit and/or visa?

Once you are accepted to work with Latin Link, either in Latin America or elsewhere, we will provide the legal and/or employment documents necessary to support any visa application you may need to make.

Can I work in Europe with Latin Link?

Yes, but see the first question above.

Do I need to be able to speak the language of the country I want to work in?

For those joining short term Step Teams, while an advantage, this is not essential. For those going on Stride, an ability to communicate in the language of the country is essential. Learning and improving your language to an appropriate level will be built into your individual programme.

Can you put me in touch with a Latin Link member working in a particular country or type of ministry, and could I visit them?

Latin Link members may be able to offer advice, or even receive a visit, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible.

I have a couple of weeks free in the summer – can I go and help in one of your projects?

We recommend you do this through one of our existing programmes. Perhaps you might consider joining one of our short-term teams in Latin America, Spain or Portugal for a minimum of three weeks? [Link to Step teams] See Step teams.

Ethical Questions

Does Latin Link only work with the poor?

While many of the churches we are linked with are in the poorer areas, Latin Link’s focus is not exclusively on helping the poor. We recognise that there are needs at all levels of society and respond as and where we can.

Do I need to be an evangelical Christian to work with Latin Link?

If you are working in a mission context you need to be able to affirm our Statement of Faith and be in agreement with our principles. Some people support Latin Link financially or in other ways because they like our values, and what we do, while not fully sharing the same Christian beliefs. Involvement in this way may fulfil part of a commitment to social responsibility.

Finance

Can I sponsor a child through Latin Link?

We do not offer individual child sponsorship ourselves, but some projects where we work have children sponsored by other agencies.

Gift and donations

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a system that allows Latin Link to reclaim tax on a gift from a UK taxpayer and increases the value of the gift.

I am a higher rate UK taxpayer – can Latin Link reclaim the higher rate tax?

Unfortunately we are unable to do so – we can only reclaim tax at the basic rate (currently 20% on the gross gift). You will be able to reclaim the total tax in your annual tax return

How much can you reclaim?

We are able to reclaim at 25% of the gift made to us (20% on the gross gift). So if you make a gift of £100, we can reclaim £25 from the government.

How much tax do I have to have paid?

You have to have paid an amount at least equal to the tax reclaimed.

On your tax return, you will need to show the gift of £125; £100 is your gift with tax of £25 which we will reclaim from HMRC.

For more information on ways to give, please see finance FAQs.
