Working abroad

Q: Can I do mission with Latin Link in my own country, or do I have to go abroad?
A: ‘Latin mission’ is our focus, so this would usually mean working in the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America. However, it is possible you could work with Latin American migrants in Europe.

Alternatively, you could join our Network of local volunteers who support and raise the profile of Latin Link where they live, work or study and help out at regional events.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Will Latin Link arrange for my work permit and/or visa?
A: Once you are accepted to work with Latin Link, either in Latin America or elsewhere, we will provide the legal and/or employment documents necessary to support any visa application you may need to make.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Can I work in Europe with Latin Link?
A: Yes, but see the first question above.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Do I need to be able to speak the language of the country I want to work in?
A: For those joining short term Step Teams, while an advantage, this is not essential. For those going on Stride, an ability to communicate in the language of the country is essential. Learning and improving your language to an appropriate level will be built into your individual programme.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Can you put me in touch with a Latin Link member working in a particular country or type of ministry, and could I visit them?
A: Latin Link members may be able to offer advice, or even receive a visit, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I have a couple of weeks free in the summer – can I go and help in one of your projects?
A: We recommend you do this through one of our existing programmes. Perhaps you might consider joining one of our short-term teams in Latin America, Spain or Portugal for a minimum of three weeks? See Step teams.

A: The first step is to contact the Latin Link office nearest to you. You can use the contact us form to find out more, or download an application form to join a Step team or apply for an individual Stride placement. Alternatively we would be happy to have an informal discussion with you, either on the phone or face-to-face.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Is there an age limit for applicants?
A: We consider applications from people aged 17 or over, unless they are coming with their family, when any age is possible.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Do I need a degree to join Latin Link?
A: Not necessarily. Qualifications will depend upon the type of work you want to do.

Back to main FAQs

Ethical Questions

Q: Does Latin Link only work with the poor?
A: While many of the churches we are linked with are in the poorer areas, Latin Link’s focus is not exclusively on helping the poor. We recognise that there are needs at all levels of society and respond as and where we can.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Do I need to be an evangelical Christian to work with Latin Link?
A: If you are working in a mission context you need to be able to affirm our Statement of Faith and be in agreement with our principles. Some people support Latin Link financially or in other ways because they like our values, and what we do, while not fully sharing the same Christian beliefs. Involvement in this way may fulfil part of a commitment to social responsibility.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Can I sponsor a child through Latin Link?
A: We do not offer individual child sponsorship ourselves, but some projects where we work have children sponsored by other agencies.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Which credit/debit cards do you accept?
We accept all Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and Delta, and Switch.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I don’t have a credit/debit card – what can I do?
You can send us a cheque or alternatively ask a friend/relative who has a credit/debit card to make a payment to us on your behalf

Back to main FAQs

Q: I want to leave a legacy
We would be happy to talk about this with you so please call us on +44 (0)118 957 7109.

Back to main FAQs

Q: What currencies do you accept?
We can take donations via credit/debit cards in pounds, US dollars and euros. Should your card be denominated in a different currency then please select pounds and you will be charged at the exchange rate set by your credit card company

Back to main FAQs

Q: I want to give anonymously – what should I do?
There is a tick box for anonymous donations. If you tick this box then your details will not be revealed to the person you wish to support. However, we do still need your details in order to process the gift.

Back to main FAQs

Q: What does ‘where most needed’ mean?
‘Where most needed’ enables Latin Link to decide how to allocate the gift according to current needs within Latin Link Britain and Ireland.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I want to make sure my gift goes towards a specific person/project – how do I do that?
If you are making a donation online by credit/debit card, you can select the name of the person or their associated project you wish to support. There is also a free text box to add further information about your gift, or to give us a specific request.

Back to main FAQs

Q: The person/project does not appear in the box – what should I do?
When looking for a particular person look to see if they are listed with their spouse. To support a particular project you will need to choose the member to which it is associated. If your issue is still not resolved, enter as much detail as you can in the “specific request” free text box, so that we can match your donation accordingly.

Back to main FAQs

Q: What is WorldPay?
WorldPay is a payment services provider, and processes all credit/debit card donations on our behalf.

Back to main FAQs

Q: How do I make a regular monthly gift?
If you mark the box ‘regular monthly donation’ then your credit/debit card will be charged each month with the amount you indicate. Alternatively, you can set up a standing order or use on-line banking, for this option please call us on +44 (0)118 957 7102.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I wish to set up a standing order – how do I do that?
Please call us on +44 (0)118 957 7102 for further information.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I don’t have a Latin Link donor number – does this matter?
Your donor number will help us to process your gift more efficiently. However, if you are a new donor, or do not have your number to hand, we can still accept your donation.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I pay tax in the USA/Canada, how can I make my gift tax efficient?
We have a relationship with our partner organisations, LAM USA and LAM Canada.  If you are resident in either of these countries and wish to give to Latin Link you can do so via their website (www.lam.org). Your gift should qualify under current US/Canadian rules.

Back to main FAQs

Q: Do you give receipts?
If you make a donation using a credit/debit card you will receive an email confirmation of your gift from World Pay and a ‘thank you’ from Latin Link. Any gifts received by post will be acknowledged by letter unless you state otherwise.

Gifts and donations

Q: What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a system that allows Latin Link to reclaim tax on a gift from a UK taxpayer and increases the value of the gift.

Back to main FAQs

Q: I am a higher rate UK taxpayer – can Latin Link reclaim the higher rate tax?
Unfortunately we are unable to do so – we can only reclaim tax at the basic rate (currently 20% on the gross gift). You will be able to reclaim the total tax in your annual tax return

Back to main FAQs

Q: How much can you reclaim?
We are able to reclaim at 25% of the gift made to us (20% on the gross gift). So if you make a gift of £100, we can reclaim £25 from the government.

Back to main FAQs

Q: How much tax do I have to have paid?
You have to have paid an amount at least equal to the tax reclaimed.
On your tax return, you will need to show the gift of £125; £100 is your gift with tax of £25 which we will reclaim from HMRC.
