Project overview

Want a very different summer? This team will head to the beautiful colonial city of León in the west of Nicaragua, just under two hours from the capital Managua. You'll live and work in community, serving the local church as they seek to improve living conditions and reach out to their neighbours and friends. This project will be focused on improving sanitation in the community by helping to build new toilets and showers. Good sanitation is something we so easily take for granted, but this will make a massive different to the community there, helping long term to avoid illnesses and other problems.

Practical work

You'll get stuck in helping with maintenance of the main church building - this could involve cleaning, sanding, painting, repairing things etc. - and the annex which is used to serve food. The church building is a very important building in the community and the church run several ministries from this base. It is a real centre of praise and worship, regional meetings, retreats, training events and prayer nights.
Your team will also be working on the vital construction of 4 toilets and 10 showers. You'll be working alongside the pastors and church members who are experienced builders, welders and carpenters.

Church work

The project will have a practical focus, but as a team you'll be completely involved in local church life, helping with kids work, worship, sharing testimonies and dramas, and much more. You'll have the flexibility to bless the church with the gifts and skills you have as a team, as well as working with the children and youth there. The church are planning a Youth Camp in July for 2-3 days, so you'll also get to be part of that!

Don't worry if you don't have much experience - as long as you're ready and willing to throw yourself in, work hard and show a real servant heart, we believe God will really use you to bless this project! You'll also have some time off as a team to explore this beautiful country...

Step teams stay right in the heart of the community they are serving, living together as a team. Your team will be staying in the church building and will be looked after by the church family.
Nicaraguans are extremely hospitable but as you're going to areas with greater economic need, you should expect accommodation to be cosy and fairly basic.

How much does it cost?

Contribution Target: £900 (+ £50 Project Fund)

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step Programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What does your contribution cover?

 Orientation before departure (residential)*
 Country specific training and materials
 Food and accommodation
 Health clearance and medical advice
 Project setup and supervision
 Residential debrief weekend
 Comprehensive insurance cover
£50 towards project material e.g. bricks, paint, wood, cement, crafts/ art supplies etc.
Admin costs - DBS, application process, resources etc.

What's not covered?

 Return flights
Vaccinations - some of them costs money
Pre-departure UK travel - We usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team.
 Personal spending money

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target - all you need to do is get there!

*Orientation for 2017 will be held just outside Reading from the 23rd-25th June.

Want to go for longer?

If you're free for 7 weeks over the summer and want to make the most of your time in Latin America, why not do both of our summer projects?
