In Latin America whole communities – around half the population
– still live in very poor conditions. On low incomes, with few
opportunities or aspirations, they enjoy little in the way of benefits or essential
services. Poverty and deprivation in the shantytowns and slum
areas of the big cities provides a breeding ground for all kinds
of vice and violence
In most urban areas, though, you'll
find churches with a life-changing message
and a potential to transform the future. While some churches are
wealthy, many Latin American Christians are themselves poor -
though unstinting in their generosity and hospitality.
In the countryside the situation is
more difficult as churches are often isolated and left to struggle on largely
unsupported.
Latin Link responds to needs
by sending people to work with churches and Christian organisations
in many different ways, to -
-
develop health education programmes
-
work with street children and
families at risk
-
contribute to rural development
-
raise awareness and meet the
needs of disabled people
-
generate jobs for the unemployed
-
visit and carry out advocacy on
behalf of prisoners.
This kind of work benefits from
long term commitment. It can be dangerous, emotionally demanding,
and initially unrewarding. But it is an integral part of Latin
Link’s holistic and compassionate approach to mission. Along with
our Latin American partners and colleagues we are seeking good
working practices that make a lasting difference in difficult
areas.
